Wir haben uns entschieden einen kleinen Trip über das verlängerte Weekend vom Australia Day zu machen und haben die “Great Ocean Road” und die “Grampians” besucht. Während dieser Reise wurde uns bewusst, dass es cool wäre euch jeweils einige Tipps zu geben :-).

Wenn ihr also auf der “Great Ocean Road” reist müsst ihr euch auf viele Touristen einstellen. Falls ihr das nicht ausstehen könnt, würden wir euch empfehlen sehr berühmte Dinge, wie die “Twelve Apostles”, früh am Morgen zu besuchen oder nur an weniger bekannten jedoch nicht weniger schönen Orten wie der “Bay of Martyrs” halt zu machen. Diese ist bedeutend ruhiger und man kann die genauso wundervolle Landschaft etwas einsamer geniessen. Abgesehen von den eindrücklichen Kliff-Formationen hat uns persönlich der Teil zwischen ”Geelong” und “Apollo Bay” besser gefallen. In diesem Routenabschnitt fanden wir die Landschaft viel schöner und die Strasse ist mit Ihren Kurven eine wahre Freude zu befahren.
Die erste Nacht verbrachten wir in “Apollo Bay“ auf dem “Apollo Recreation Reserve & Camping Ground”. Es hat uns dort gut gefallen obwohl der Camping Platz ein eher mittelmässiges Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis hatte. Auf dem Weg dorthin sind wir jedoch auch an “Lorne” vorbei gefahren, welches unserer Meinung nach ziemlich cool ausgesehen hat. Wir könnten uns vorstellen, dass es dort ebenfalls reichlich schöne Plätze zum Übernachten gäbe.

Von “Apollo Bay” sind wir anschliessend ein Stück von der Küste weggefahren, um den “Otway Forest”, welcher sich wie ein Regenwald durch die dortige Hügellandschaft zieht, zu sehen. Es war ein eindrückliches Erlebnis durch diesen Teil des “Otway National Parks” zu fahren. Ein Muss ist es in dieser Region den “Turtons Track” zu befahren. Dies ist eine enge jedoch asphaltierte und eher wenig befahrene Strasse, welche sich durch das Dickicht schlängelt… einfach genial. Für Vogelliebhaber, wie Fabienne, ist dabei ein Halt beim “Yatzies Cafe” besonders zu empfehlen. Dort kann man zutrauliche, jedoch wilde Papageie (Australian King Parrot und Crimson Rosella) füttern.

Zwischen “Lower Gellibrand” und “Pricetown” befindet sich die “Old Ocean Road”: ein weiterer Geheimtipp welcher eure Reise von 08-15 Touristen unterscheiden wird. Obwohl es sich hierbei um eine Kiesstrasse handelt wird kein 4WD-Auto benötigt um diese wunderschöne Landschaft zu erkunden. Die “Old Ocean Road” biegt in einem Gebiet, in welchem die “Great Ocean Road” ein wenig ins Landesinnere abbiegt, von dieser ab und verläuft anschliessend durch die hügelige Landschaft in Küstennähe bis sie schlussendlich wider in der “Great Ocean Road” mündet.

Kurz vor “Allansford”, wo die “Great Ocean Road” aufhört, führte unsere Reise weiter in Richtung “Grampians”. Dies ist ein toller Ort für Leute die gerne Berge haben und gerne wandern. Eine sehr schöne Wanderung, zu welcher auch wir uns entschieden haben, führt vom “Wonderland carpark” zum “Pinnacle lookout”. Die gesamte Wanderung ist etwa 6km lang und etwas anstrengend, vor allem an heissen Tagen. Die grossartige Aussicht und die Gesteinsformationen entlang des Weges sind jedoch die Strapazen wert :-). Da diese Wanderung aber ziemlich berühmt zu sein scheint gilt auch hier: macht euch auf ein paar Touristen gefasst (jedoch beachtlich weniger als bei den “Twelve Apostles”). Wem das Wandern nicht besonders zusagt dem soll die bemerkenswerte Aussicht über die “Grampians” nicht verwehrt bleiben: den “Boroka lookout” kann man mit dem Auto erreichen und wir würden jedem (auch den Wandervögeln) empfehlen dort vorbei zu schauen.

Die beiden Nächte in den “Grampians” haben wir auf dem ”Halls Gap Lakeside Caravan Park” verbracht. Dieser Platz ist einfach grossartig: das Personal ist freundlich und die Infrastruktur ist top. Auch wenn wir selber noch keine Kinder haben, ist uns aufgefallen, dass es ein sehr familienfreundlicher Campingplatz ist. Da wir über ein Feiertags-Wochenende dort waren, war es sehr voll und durch den Kinderlärm ziemlich laut. Unter der Woche und an ”Nicht-Ferientagen” ist dies jedoch nicht der Fall. Am Rande des Campingplatzes kann man, je nach Lärmpegel mehr oder weniger Kängurus, Emus und Rehen beim Fressen beobachten. Den Kakadus jedoch ist jeglicher Lärm egal, diese stehlen einem immer die Snacks weg :-). Die besten Plätze um den Tieren beim Fressen zuzuschauen sind die folgenden, welche wir sehr empfehlen zum Voraus zu reservieren um die schönten Eindrücke und Aussichten von diesem Ort mit nach Hause zu nehmen: 107,108,128,129 oder 150.

We decided to make a little trip to Victoria over the long weekend of Australia Day and visited the “Great Ocean Road” and the “Grampians”. During this trip we thought it would be nice to give you some tips :-).

When you travel the “Great Ocean Road” you need to be prepared, that there will be heaps of tourists. If you can’t stand this, we would recommend to see very famous things, like the “Twelve Apostles”, early in the morning or just stop at other less famous but still very nice places, like the “Bay of Martrys”. There you can enjoy the lovely landscape with much less other tourists. Apart from the remarkable cliff formations we personal preferred the part from “Geelong” to “Apollo Bay”. We found the landscape was much more beautiful and the curvy street is a pleasure to drive along.

The first night we stayed at “Apollo Bay” on the “Apollo Recreation Reserve & Camping Ground”. We liked this spot, but it is a little bit expensive, for what it is. On the way we passed “Lorne” and that looked quite nice to us. We could imagine, that there are a few good place to stay over night as well.
From “Apollo Bay” we drove a little part away from the coast to see the “Otway Forest”, which lays like a rainforest between the hilly landscape. It was a impressive experience to drive trough this part of the “Otway National Park”. We would highly recommend to drive along the “Turtons Track”. It is a narrow asphalt street with less traffic, who leads right trough the rainforest… just great. If you are a bird lover, like Fabienne, then the “Yatzies Cafe” on the way back to the coast is a great place to stop. You can feed some wild but pretty trusting parrots (Australian King Parrot and Crimson Rosella) there.

Between “Lower Gellibrand” and “Pricetown” you will find the “Old Ocean Road”: an other insider tip, which will separate your journey from a common trip. It is a gravel road, but you do not need a 4WD-car to see this gorgeous landscape. The “Old Ocean Road” starts and ends on the “Great Ocean Road” and is in an area, where the “Great Ocean Road” is a little bit further away from the coast, this street drives along a hilly landscape closer to the coast.

Near by “Allansford”, where the “Great Ocean Road” ends, we headed off to the “Grampians”. This is a great spot for people, who like mountains and hiking. A beautiful hike, which we decided to do, takes you from the “Wonderland carpark” to the “Pinnacle lookout”. The hole hike is around 6km long and a little bit exhausting, if it is a hot day. But the great view and also the very nice rock formations along the way covers the pain :-). This hike seems to be quite famous, so again: be prepared for a bunch of tourists (even if it’s not as bad as at the “Twelve Apostles”). If you are not a big hiker you do not need to miss out the stunning view over the “Grampians”: the “Boroka lookout” you can reach with the car and we would everybody (even the hikers) recommend to go there.

We spend the other two nights in the “Grampians” on the “Halls Gap Lakeside Caravan Park”. This spot is just great: the staff is friendly and the infrastructure is very good. Even when we do not have kids yet, we recognized that this caravan park is also a very family friendly place. Because we stayed there during the long weekend it was very busy and quite nosy from all the kids around. But when you stay during the week it is more quiet. Depending on the noise level you can see more or less wild kangaroos, emus and even some roes around the camping ground. Just the cockatoos are there, no matter what, and steal from your snacks :-). If you like to sleep next to the field and observe the animals during their dinner, then we would recommend to reserve one of those places: 107,108,128,129 or 150.
